Our Story
Founded in 2018, Tumbleroot is a craft brewery and distillery rooted in Santa Fe, New Mexico. From our very beginning, we’ve been committed to creating exceptional beer, spirits, liqueurs, bitters, and canned cocktails—from scratch, using organic, garden-grown, and wild-harvested ingredients.
Our production facility is home to an intimate tasting room and bottle shop, where guests can sample award-winning creations, enjoy a craft cocktail or pint, and take a deeper look into how we brew and distill. Our spirits have earned international medals, and our beers have brought home national awards from the Great American Beer Festival and the National Honey Board. In 2020, Edible magazine readers voted us the Best Distilled Spirit Producer in New Mexico. Weekly tours of our brewery and distillery are offered every Wednesday and Thursday.
Our flagship location, Club Alegria on Agua Fria Street, is where Santa Fe comes together to celebrate. With an expansive courtyard, indoor-outdoor bars, and seasonal farm-to-table menu, it’s a gathering space for families, date nights, live music lovers, and cocktail enthusiasts alike. We’re proud of our from-scratch bar program, where every syrup, shrub, bitter, and cordial is crafted in-house to bring out the best in our alcoholic and zero-proof beverages. This location has won numerous awards over the years from Best of Santa Fe: Best Bar 2022, 2023, 2025, and Best Late Night Hangout 2025.

Tumbleroot is owned and operated by Jason and Angela Kirkman, a husband-and-wife duo with deep roots in food, fermentation, and creative craft. Jason, a brewer and distiller by trade, brings years of hands-on experience and a passion for process. Angela is an avid gardener, growing many of the ingredients that show up in our spirits, and a ceramic artist whose handmade ware can be found at Club Alegria and Tumbleroot Pottery Pub—a sister space that blends pottery, cocktails, and creativity.
Together, they’ve built Tumbleroot as a place to celebrate craft, culture, and community—a space that reflects the spirit of Santa Fe in every pour.

Jason Kirkman
Owner/Master Brewer and Distiller
Jason is our founder and the head of brewery and distillery operations. Born in upstate New York, and a graduate of Colorado College, he has been a homebrewer since the early 90’s and has worked several stints as a commercial brewer and distiller, most recently at Bathtub Row Brewing Cooperative in Los Alamos and Broken Trail Brewery and Distillery in Albuquerque. A resident of Santa Fe since 2002, Jason was an elementary and middle school teacher for 12 years. Jason, Angela, and their three children, Cyrus, Isabella, and Cruz, have shared many experiences traveling, both within the states and internationally. Their two-year journey around the world is documented on the website thebigfieldtrip.com. Jason’s favorite beers are hoppy lagers, Belgian Tripels, and farmhouse style ales.

Angela Smith Kirkman
Owner/Director of Business Operations
Angela Smith Kirkman is a ceramic artist with over thirty years of experience specializing in rustic dinnerware influenced by years of travel. She and Jason recently returned from a journey around the world during which they hiked the Inca Trail, snuck into a communist headquarters in Bulgaria, rode camelback through the Sahara, caught the swine flu in Istanbul, were chased out of the Grand Mosque of Uqba, lived on a vineyard in Portugal, taught at a tribal school in Rajasthan, biked floating markets of Thailand, and communed with snow monkeys in Japan. Angela is excited to be joining Jason in managing Tumbleroot, alongside her other business, Paseo Pottery.

Michael Chavez
Brewery & Distillery Production Manager
Raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Michael has pursued a variety of careers in his life including sous-chef, restaurant manager, audio engineer, music producer, and is currently the Production Manager in Tumbleroot’s Brewery & Distillery. Michael’s appreciation of craft beer began one fateful evening years ago, sipping homebrews under the stars and discussing every nuanced detail with his longtime friends, Jason and Angela Kirkman. Upon Jason’s invitation to join Tumbleroot in 2018, Michael found a home utilizing his multitude of skills by managing the bar, running live sound, and assisting in the brewery/distillery. In 2022, he became the lead brewer and distiller, then in 2023 moved up to Production Manager. He loves continuing to learn and grow with Tumbleroot, and occasionally to crack a brew under the stars with Jason and Angela.
